TOEFL in the UAE 2027 — Registration, Fees, Scores and the New System
The test is now 90 minutes, scored 1-6 instead of 0-120, and Reading and Listening are adaptive. Any guide still quoting a 0-120 total is out of date.
Why TOEFL Matters More in the UAE Now
Following the discontinuation of the EmSAT, UAE universities rely on TOEFL or IELTS as the two recognised routes for proving English proficiency. The language requirement itself was never removed — only the pathway narrowed.
What Changed in January 2026
| Aspect | Before | Now |
|---|---|---|
| Score scale | 0-120 | 1-6 (0.5 increments, CEFR-aligned) |
| Overall calculation | Sum of sections | Average of sections |
| Duration | ~2-3 hours | 90 minutes |
| Reading & Listening | Fixed | Multistage adaptive |
| Section order | R, L, Speaking, Writing | R, L, Writing, Speaking |
| Writing | 29 min, essays | 23 min, practical tasks |
| Results | 4-8 days | 3 days |
During the 2026-2028 transition, score reports show the 1-6 band, the comparable 0-120 figure, and your CEFR level together.
Is TOEFL iBT Accepted by UAE Universities?
Yes. TOEFL iBT is accepted for admission by UAE universities across the public, private and international branch-campus sectors, alongside IELTS. It is also accepted in place of the discontinued EmSAT English component by most institutions.
What differs is not whether a score is accepted but what score is required, and that moves in a predictable direction:
- Undergraduate entry at national universities sets the lowest threshold, often with a foundation or bridging pathway below it.
- Postgraduate programmes sit higher, and research degrees higher again.
- International branch campuses and highly selective institutions set the highest bar, because the whole programme is taught and assessed in English at the parent university's standard.
- Some programmes also set a per-section floor — typically on Speaking or Writing — in addition to the overall band.
Scores are valid for two years from the test date and universities enforce that strictly, so work backwards from your application deadline when choosing a test date.

Test Centres in the UAE
Authorised ETS centres operate in Dubai (the widest availability), Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Al Ain and other locations. Available dates appear when you select your test date during registration; popular centres fill early in peak admission season.
| Emirate | Centre | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Dubai | Amideast Dubai | Official ETS partner centre |
| Abu Dhabi | Amideast Abu Dhabi | Official ETS partner centre |
| Dubai | Prometric | Multiple locations |
| Abu Dhabi | Prometric | Abu Dhabi locations |
| Sharjah | Prometric | Available |
Centre availability changes — the live list is the one shown in the ETS booking flow for your date.
TOEFL iBT Home Edition
A Home Edition exists under strict technical conditions, taken under live remote proctoring. Confirm two things before choosing it: availability in your location, and whether your university accepts it.
What you need:
- A quiet private room with nobody else present
- A desktop or laptop computer — not a tablet or phone
- A stable internet connection
- Webcam, microphone and speaker
- Your valid passport as ID
What is not allowed:
- Notes, books or scratch paper
- A second monitor
- Headphones — built-in speakers only
- Anyone else in the room
Registration — Two Routes
Route 1: We register on your behalf
As an authorised ETS agent, Elmadrasah.com handles booking, payment and paperwork end to end. Particularly useful if:
- Your card has been declined for international payments
- You are registering for the first time and want your details verified
- You are a parent registering for your child
- You are applying from outside the UAE (Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain)
Route 2: We guide you step by step
Prefer to register yourself? We walk you through the ETS platform, help you choose a date matched to your readiness, and review your details before you confirm. The self-registration flow runs as follows:
- Create an account at ets.org/toefl
- Choose "Register for a Test" and select the UAE as your country
- Choose a test centre or the Home Edition
- Pick your date and time slot
- Enter your personal details exactly as they appear on your passport
- Pay the fee with a card accepted by ETS
- Keep the confirmation email and admission ticket
Book 3-4 weeks ahead. Dates in the April-June and September-November admission peaks fill quickly. You will need a valid passport — the same document on test day, with no exceptions.
Fees
ETS sets TOEFL fees by country, payable by international card at registration. The base fee covers the test, your official score report, and score delivery to a limited number of institutions selected during registration.
Additional charges may apply for: late registration • rescheduling • cancellation • extra score recipients • rescoring of Speaking or Writing.
Fee amounts changed alongside the January 2026 test revision. Check the current figure for the UAE at ets.org before budgeting.
Preparation Timeline
| Current level | Target | Realistic timeline |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner | 4.0 | 4-6 months |
| 3.0-3.5 | 4.0 | 8-10 weeks |
| 4.0 | 4.5-5.0 | 8-12 weeks |
| Any level | +0.5 band | 5-7 weeks |
The right order: prepare first, book second
The most common and costly mistake is booking the nearest available date and starting preparation afterwards. Take a diagnostic first, calculate the gap to your target, allow the preparation weeks above, then book with a buffer week.
Section-by-section notes
- Reading — academic passages on science, history and social topics, now adaptive. Read the question stem before the passage and work by elimination.
- Listening — academic lectures and campus conversations, also adaptive. Note the speaker's purpose and the transitions, not only the facts.
- Writing — now 23 minutes of practical tasks. State your position in the first sentence and support it with one specific example rather than several vague ones.
- Speaking — recorded responses scored by both automated and human raters. Speak at a natural pace and use every second of preparation time.
Use official ETS material only — the ETS practice tests and TOEFL Practice Online, in their post-January-2026 editions. For a deeper section-by-section breakdown of the new format, see the TOEFL iBT format and strategy guide.
FAQ
Is TOEFL iBT accepted in all UAE universities?
Virtually all UAE universities accept TOEFL iBT. The minimum score required varies by university and by programme level, so check the requirement for the exact programme you are applying to.
Can TOEFL replace EmSAT English for UAE university admission?
Most UAE universities accept TOEFL iBT in place of the discontinued EmSAT English component. Confirm with the specific university, as the accepted alternatives are listed programme by programme.
Is the new 2026 TOEFL format accepted in the UAE?
Yes. UAE universities recognise the updated TOEFL iBT and its 1-6 band scale. Because many published thresholds were written under the old 0-120 scale, ask the admissions office what the equivalent is on the new scale rather than converting it yourself.
Are old 0-120 scores still valid?
Yes — valid two years from your test date, and accepted during the transition period.
Is the new test easier?
No. The scale and format changed; the proficiency required for a given level did not.
How fast are results?
Within about 3 days.
Can I retake it?
Yes, several times a year with a set waiting period between sittings. MyBest Scores still combines your best section scores across two years — though not every university accepts MyBest, so ask.
Can I take TOEFL at home in the UAE?
Yes. The Home Edition is available under remote proctoring and uses the same questions and scoring as the test-centre version. Check that your target institution accepts it.
TOEFL or IELTS for UAE universities?
Both are accepted with published equivalences. Choose TOEFL for a shorter, fully computer-based test with no live interview; choose IELTS if you are stronger in face-to-face conversation. TOEFL uses American English throughout; IELTS uses a range of accents.
Do I need a tutor?
Reading and Listening can be partly self-improved. Speaking and Writing cannot — you cannot assess your own pronunciation or whether your writing meets ETS criteria. Together they are half your score.
